Roses are red

Rose extracts are used throughout the health and beauty industry, either as an edible extract put into herbal pills and medicine or as an extract blended in various skin products. The benefits differ depending on which type of rose extract is used. Let’s look at some of Dermalogica’s favourite rose ingredients:

  • Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract

This is an essential oil extracted from the Cabbage Rose. It is used in various massage oils and beauty products because of its aromatic properties. Due to its ability to protect and enhance skin luminosity as well as reinforcing the lipid layer Rosa Centifolia extract is used in:

  • Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance
  • Rosa Moschata Seed Oil

This ingredient is more commonly known as Rose Hips. It is very high in vitamin C and antioxidants which makes it perfect for moisturising, cell regeneration and anti-inflammatory treatment. Rosa Moschata Seed Oil can minimise fine lines and increase luminosity, especially combined with ingredients like Argan Oil and Jasmine Oil which is why it is used in:

  • Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum
  • Rose Flower Oil

Rose Flower Oil is the extract of the fruit found on various species of wild roses. It has been used as food flavouring and in skin products for many centuries and its properties lend themselves to skincare very well. Not only is Rose Oil rich in natural vitamin C, it also hydrates the skin and protects it from capillary damage, toning and firming the tissues as it moisturises the skin. It is because of these properties that Rose Oil is used in Dermalogica products like:

  • Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil
  • Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion

Violets are blue

The Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia) is perhaps the most recognisable blue violet and historically it was used for food and medicine; the Cherokee Indians used the flower to treat ailments like headaches and colds. Now, whilst violets may be famous for being blue in the familiar folk poem used on Valentine’s Day they aren’t the only blue flowers out there. One of these blue flowers is the cornflower (centaurea cyanus) which is used in everything from tea blends to antiseptic solutions for eye infections, not to mention as a natural, alcohol-free toner. Its properties make cornflower one of Dermalogica’s key ingredients:

  • Centaurea Cyanus Flower (Cornflower) Extract

This extract is taken from the flowers of the plant. It is anti-inflammatory which makes it very soothing and sedating to the skin. It is similar in its properties to the popular essential oil Chamomile Azulene). Due to its calming effects and ability to reduce irritation instantly, Centaurea Cyanus extract is used in Dermalogica products like:

  • Dermalogica Gentle Soothing Booster

Sugar is sweet

Sugar is perhaps one of the planet’s favourite ingredients and it is used in, well, everything. Of course, you know sugar is a little bit naughty for you but you also know that is tastes good…what you may not know however is how good it can be for the skin when used in the correct way. Sugar cane (saccharum officinarum) is a species of grass that was cultivated in New Guineas more than eight thousand years ago. Its sweet juice is extracted and used in granulated sugar, ethanol and other industrial products. It is also used in medicines and health and beauty products, applied externally or ingested.

  • Saccharum Officinarum

The moisturising properties of saccharum officinarum make it a popular ingredient in certain Dermalogica products, such as:

  • Dermalogica Body Hydrating Cream
